Rain Claims Final World Cup Group Game, Dashing India’s Victory Bid
The league phase of the 2025 Women’s World Cup had a frustrating end when incessant rain ruled out any possibility of even a shortened game in the match between India and Bangladesh in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, October 26. The teams had to be content with sharing points after a disorganized day filled with delays and, more worryingly for the hosts, a serious injury to a key player.
As a precautionary measure ahead of the high-stakes semi-final, the Indian team management rested wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh (owing to a finger knock) along with Kranti Gaud and Sneh Rana.
Opting to field first, India got an early breakthrough as pacer Renuka Singh struck in the first over. Bangladesh rebuilt briefly before the rain swept across the DY Patil Stadium and there was a long delay that lasted more than two hours.
When play finally got underway, the match was reduced to 27 overs per side. Indian bowlers took total control, pegging them back to a modest 119 for 9. There was a crucial 36 from Sharmin Akhter, but regular wickets, particularly a fine three-wicket haul from Radha Yadav (3/30), never allowed a partnership of substance to form.
Chasing a revised DLS target of 126, India’s chase began with an unwanted change: Amanjot Kaur opened the innings alongside Smriti Mandhana, replacing the in-form Pratika Rawal, whose involvement was cut short when she picked up an injury while fielding.
Mandhana looked intent on getting the game over as soon as possible, as she smacked four boundaries in one over. India rocketed to a commanding 57 for no loss in just 8.4 overs and were heading towards a comprehensive victory. Skies opened up once again just ten balls later to finally bring a close to the match and force the division of points.
The immediate focus of the Indian camp now shifts entirely to the fitness of opener Pratika Rawal ahead of their crucial semi-final match scheduled for Thursday.
Match Summary:
Bangladesh 119/9 in 27 overs (Sharmin Akhter 36; Radha Yadav 3/30) vs India 57/0 in 8.4 overs (Smriti Mandhana 34*). Match Abandoned Due to Rain; Points Split.
