Indian fast bowler Mohit Sharma has officially called time on his professional career, announcing his retirement from all formats of cricket via a heartfelt message on social media. The 37-year-old pacer closes a journey that spanned nearly 14 years, marked by both domestic consistency and spectacular international highlights.
A Career Defined by Resurgence
Mohit Sharma’s journey is best defined by two periods of remarkable success in the IPL:
Early Glory (CSK): After making his first-class debut for Haryana in 2011, Mohit made his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings in 2013. He quickly became a pivotal bowler under M.S. Dhoni, securing the Purple Cap in 2014 after claiming 23 wickets in the season—a feat he achieved even before making his debut for the national team.
The Veteran Comeback (GT): After struggling for form and being out of favor, Mohit staged one of cricket’s most impressive comebacks in 2023. At age 35, playing for Gujarat Titans , he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker, securing 27 wickets and guiding his team to the IPL final.
In total, Mohit played 120 matches in the IPL, taking 134 wickets across four franchises.
International and Domestic Service
Mohit’s international career, though brief (2013-2015), saw him represent India in 26 ODIs and eight T20Is, claiming 37 wickets across the limited-overs formats.
World Cup High: His most notable international achievement was being a crucial member of the Indian squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2015 Men’s ODI World Cup, where he took 13 wickets.
First-Class Stint: Domestically, he was a mainstay for Haryana, finishing his first-class career with 127 wickets in 44 matches.
Farewell and Future Plans
In his emotional retirement statement, Mohit expressed profound gratitude:
“Today, with a full heart, I announce my retirement from all formats of cricket. From representing Haryana to wearing the India jersey and playing in the IPL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing.”
He extended special thanks to the Haryana Cricket Association and mentor Anirudh Sir for supporting his career. He also gave a special mention to his wife for her patience and support. Mohit concluded by expressing his eagerness to remain involved in the game in a new capacity, looking forward to “serving the game in fresh ways.”
