Hope and Athanaze Heroics Seal Series for West Indies in Thrilling T20I
The West Indies clinched the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh with a tense 14-run victory in the second match at Chattogram. The win was set up by superb batting from Shai Hope and Alick Athanaze, who helped the visitors post 149, a total the Windies bowlers successfully defended.
First Innings: Fifties Power, Collapse Follows
Opting to bat, the West Indies quickly lost Brandon King (0/1), but a spectacular 105-run partnership between Hope and Athanaze stabilized the innings. Athanaze was given an early life on a dropped catch but capitalized fully, bringing up his second T20I fifty by taking a toll on the spinners. Hope soon followed with his own half-century.
However, the innings suffered a spectacular collapse starting in the 12th over when Nasum Ahmed removed both Athanaze (52) and Sherfane Rutherford. The slide continued with the dismissal of Hope (55) in the next over. West Indies tumbled from 106/1 to 118/6, eventually finishing their 20 overs at 149/9 after losing image credits : cricbuzz
three wickets in the final over.
Mustafizur Rahman was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers with 3/21.
Second Innings: Bangladesh Falter Under Pressure
Chasing a target of 150, Bangladesh’s innings was plagued by two themes: dropped catches by the West Indies and an inability to accelerate under pressure.
Despite the Windies dropping four catches across the innings, their bowlers found crucial wickets. Jason Holder dismissed the opener, and Akeal Hosein removed Litton Das (23) shortly after being hit for six.
Opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim held the innings together, progressing steadily to a top score of 61. Bangladesh were still in the contest at 100/3 after 15 overs, but the pressure mounted with two consecutive quiet overs. The chase ultimately faltered in the 18th over as both the well-set Tanzid and Jaker Ali fell.
The final overs saw Bangladesh lose their way completely, managing only six runs while losing two wickets in the last over, finishing at 135/8. The West Indies bowling unit shared the success, with Akeal Hosein (3/22) and Romario Shepherd (3/29) leading the defense to claim a 14-run series-clinching victory.
Brief Scores:
West Indies 149/9 (Hope 55, Athanaze 52; Mustafizur 3-21) beat Bangladesh 135/8 (Tanzid Hasan 61; Hosein 3-22, Shepherd 3-29) by 14 runs.
