End of an Era: BCB Terminates 15-Year Association with Chief Curator Gamini de Silva
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially severed its long-running relationship with head curator Gamini de Silva, effective from November 2025. The Sri Lankan curator, who held the influential position for over fifteen years, was let go despite having months remaining on his current contract extension.
The Decision and Compensation
According to officials, the parting was amicable, with the board invoking a contractual clause that allowed them to end the tenure prematurely. The BCB confirmed that it has paid Gamini two months’ salary as agreed-upon compensation to conclude his association.
Gamini’s departure follows a period of mounting tension within the board, particularly since the recruitment of Australian turf management expert Tony Hemmings. Reports suggest the relationship between Gamini and the BCB soured, exacerbated by reports that Gamini was uncooperative with the new foreign specialist, leading to Hemmings’ temporary departure.
Controversy Over Slow Surfaces
Gamini de Silva’s long tenure—where he served as the only curator in BCB history to oversee the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium for such an extended period—has long been a subject of internal and public criticism.
His watch was synonymous with slow and low-bouncing pitches that many believed hindered the development of Bangladeshi batting talent and offered limited scoring opportunities in both international and domestic matches. The curator had recently been transferred from the Dhaka venue to oversee facilities in Rajshahi, a move that signaled the board’s desire for a change in direction.
The termination marks the start of a new chapter for the BCB as they prioritize the development of more sporting wickets across the country.
