Bangladesh is acutely focused on restoring its confidence in the shortest format as the team prepares to face Ireland in a three-match T20I series, starting November 27. Team Director Abdur Razzak highlighted the necessity of achieving rhythm following recent setbacks.
The Litton Das-led T20 squad is keen to rebound after suffering a disappointing 3-0 series defeat at home against the West Indies. This series holds immense significance as it represents Bangladesh’s final international engagement before the ICC T20 World Cup next February in India and Sri Lanka.
Targeting a Clean Series Win
Razzak, speaking to reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport before the squad’s departure for Chattogram, made it clear that anything less than a series victory would be a missed opportunity.
“Predicting the exact outcome is challenging right now, but our main objective is to finish this assignment strongly. We are determined to win the series and will strive for victory in every single match,” Razzak affirmed.
He maintained that the team’s recent form, which includes four wins and three losses across seven T20I series this year, has been average. “We split the series against the West Indies (winning one format, losing another), so judging our performance as entirely poor wouldn’t be fair. However, our singular goal now is to secure this T20I series.”
The Crucial Role of Momentum
Razzak stressed that momentum is the deciding factor in modern cricket, emphasizing that the team needs consistent success leading into the World Cup.
“We have actually managed to win the majority of our recent series, which is a positive trend. But this format is all about momentum; the team that maintains it longer ends up securing the win,” he stated. “We must ensure we keep that positive momentum with us for as long as possible in this series.”
Early Assessment of Mohammad Ashraful
The former national selector also commented on the impact of ex-national captain Mohammad Ashraful, who recently joined the team as a batting coach ahead of the Ireland tour. Razzak cautioned against making any immediate judgments on Ashraful’s effect.
“Ashraful’s experience is undeniable—he is one of our most seasoned cricketers. However, it’s just the start of his tenure, so evaluating the impact in such a short period is difficult,” Razzak noted.
He concluded by observing that Ashraful’s focus is strategic: “I see him prioritizing tactics over technical changes. He is constantly engaging with the batters during training and even during matches. I am confident his presence and counsel will ultimately benefit the entire squad.”
The series opener is scheduled for November 27, followed by two subsequent matches on November 29 and December 2.
