The Pretoria Capitals have officially appointed Keshav Maharaj as their new captain for the upcoming SA20 season, confirming the news on Friday, December 12. Maharaj, who previously led the Durban Super Giants, steps into the role previously held by Rilee Rossouw.
Rossouw, released by the Capitals before the player auction, has since signed with the Jo’burg Super Kings for R500,000, while Maharaj became one of Pretoria’s premium signings at R1.7 million.
In their announcement, the Capitals praised Maharaj’s leadership credentials, noting:
“Keshav brings vast international experience and a calm, strategic mindset. His time captaining South Africa in limited-overs formats and his senior role in the national setup make him an ideal leader for this squad.”
The franchise added that his arrival offers both stability and direction as they prepare for the new season.
Maharaj has been a standout performer in the SA20 so far—his tally of 27 wickets in 33 matches makes him the second-highest wicket-taking spinner in the tournament’s history.
The Capitals also made significant off-field changes, appointing Sourav Ganguly as head coach and bringing in Shaun Pollock as assistant coach, replacing Jonathan Trott in the revamped support team.
With the largest purse of R32.5 million at the September auction, Pretoria made some major signings. Their most expensive purchase was Dewald Brevis, secured for R16.5 million. Other high-value additions include:
- Connor Esterhuizen – R3.2 million
- Lizaad Williams – R2.4 million
- Lungi Ngidi – R2.3 million
- Bryce Parsons – R1.9 million
- Saqib Mahmood – R1.5 million
- Craig Overton – R1 million
Additionally, Sherfane Rutherford and Will Jacks returned as pre-signed players, while Andre Russell joined the squad as their wild card pick.
