Beth Mooney’s explosive 44-ball 76, combined with a match-winning three-wicket performance from Alana King, helped Perth Scorchers secure an 11-run victory over Sydney Sixers in the WBBL Challenger. This win sets up an exciting final against Hobart Hurricanes on Saturday.
Electing to bat first, Scorchers received solid starts from Katie Mack and Mooney, who put together a 66-run opening stand. Mack took the initiative with aggressive strokes but was dismissed by Ashleigh Gardner in the eighth over. Mooney continued her fine form, smashing 11 fours and a six while forming crucial partnerships with Sophie Devine, Paige Scholfield, and Maddy Darke to keep the scoreboard ticking.
The Sixers fought back in the middle overs, with Amelia Kerr picking up a couple of key wickets. Maitlan Brown eventually ended Mooney’s innings in the 19th over, but by then, the Scorchers had already posted a competitive total of 172. Gardner grabbed two wickets in the final over, leaving Scorchers with 183/8 — a target that proved just enough.
Sydney’s chase began positively with a 58-run opening partnership between Sophia Dunkley and Ellyse Perry. However, Alana King broke through in the eighth over, triggering a mini-collapse. Alyssa Healy, struggling for form, was bowled for just 1 by Chloe Ainsworth, and Ruby Strange quickly sent Dunkley back to the pavilion four balls later.
Kerr and Gardner attempted to rebuild with a 53-run stand for the fourth wicket, with Kerr hitting 42 off 29 balls, including six boundaries. Yet, King returned to claim the vital wickets of Gardner and Maitlan Brown, effectively ending the Sixers’ hopes. Sydney managed 172/6 in their 20 overs, extending their wait for a WBBL title.
