Bangladesh ‘A’ pace-bowling all-rounder Tofael Ahmed Raihan has officially been indicted after police completed their investigation into allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman by deceiving her with promises of marriage.
Charge Sheet Filed Under Strict Protection Law
On Thursday (December 11), Sub-Inspector Md Samiul Islam of Gulshan Police Station confirmed that the charge sheet was submitted under Section 9(1) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Investigators stated that the accusations were initially verified through the victim’s statement, hotel reservation documents, medical evaluations, and supporting evidence, all of which pointed to a prima facie case.
The court is expected to take up the charge sheet at the next hearing scheduled for December 30, according to officials familiar with the proceedings.
How the Relationship Began and Turned Into a Criminal Complaint
Case records show that Tofael first connected with the woman through Facebook in January. Their communication on Messenger intensified over time, eventually becoming romantic after he repeatedly claimed he intended to marry her. She agreed to the relationship after his assurances.
Alleged Assault at Gulshan Hotel
According to the complaint, on January 31, Tofael took her to a hotel in Gulshan, introduced her to staff as his spouse, and allegedly engaged in sexual activities without her consent.
She stated that similar incidents occurred multiple times afterward, with Tofael continuing to promise marriage while allegedly exploiting her.
When she later asked him to proceed with marriage, he allegedly refused — leading her to file a formal case at Gulshan Police Station on August 1, accusing him of repeated sexual assault.
High Court Bail and Violation of Surrender Order
On September 24, the High Court granted Tofael six weeks of anticipatory bail and instructed him to surrender before the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal once the bail ended.
Officials say the cricketer failed to obey the surrender directive.
Despite the ongoing case, Tofael — a regular member of the Bangladesh ‘A’ squad — travelled to Hong Kong during this period to take part in a six-a-side cricket competition after securing bail.
