Melbourne, Australia – The Melbourne Stars delivered a highly comprehensive performance against the Hobart Hurricanes at the Junction Oval, securing a 37-run victory and snapping the Hurricanes’ dominant five-match winning run. This result hands the table-topping Hurricanes their second consecutive loss of the WBBL 2025 season.
Kapp Sets the Tone with New Ball Blitz
South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, who has been in stellar late-season form, dictated the contest’s direction with her bowling. Defending a moderate total of 151, Kapp struck immediately, removing the in-form opener Lizelle Lee with the very first ball of the chase. She doubled the early damage in her next over by dismissing Danielle Wyatt-Hodge. Kapp’s potent opening spell of three overs yielded 2 wickets for just 16 runs, immediately putting the Hurricanes under immense pressure from which they never recovered.
Jones Anchors the Stars’ Total
Earlier, the Stars’ innings was built on resilience after Kapp fell cheaply. Wicketkeeper Amy Jones played the crucial stabilizing role, anchoring a 52-run partnership with captain Meg Lanning (26). Jones’s steady hand produced 59 runs, featuring six boundaries and a six. After a brief wobble, Danielle Gibson provided essential late acceleration, striking 39 runs to guide the Stars to a competitive final total of 151 for 7.
Bowling Attack Finishes the Job
The Hurricanes’ chase struggled for stability after Kapp’s early strikes. Although Natalie Sciver-Brunt offered a short counter-attack with 27 off 21 balls, her dismissal initiated a swift 4-wicket collapse for just 13 runs that derailed the innings. Spinner Sophie Day expertly exploited the chaos, capitalizing on the early pressure to finish with brilliant figures of 4 wickets for only 17 runs. The Hurricanes folded well short of the target at 114 in the 17th over, confirming the comprehensive nature of the Stars’ win.
Kapp capped her excellent all-round display by taking a sharp outfield catch to dismiss the final batter.
