Day two of the second Test in Guwahati was a big surprise as the South African lower-order batsmen scored a massive amount of runs against the Indian bowlers. South Africa finished their first innings with a huge score of 489 runs.
Jansen Hit Fast, Muthusamy Batted Long
The big score was built by two players who played very differently:
- Marco Jansen (The Fast Hitter): Jansen came in and immediately attacked the bowlers. He hit an amazing seven sixes and scored 93 runs off only 91 balls. His hitting was so strong that he broke several bats! He nearly got a century, but got out seven runs short when the ball hit his stumps. His fast scoring changed the game completely.
- Senuran Muthusamy (The Patient Scorer): Muthusamy was the complete opposite. He stood firm and played slowly and carefully for almost five hours. He survived the tough bowling and scored a fantastic 109 runs, which was his first-ever century in Test cricket. He helped keep the score growing while Jansen was hitting hard.
The Big Problem for India
South Africa’s final score of 489 is one of their biggest in India in many years. This result puts huge pressure on the Indian team.
India’s openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, finished the day safely, but India starts Day 3 needing 480 runs just to match the score. The Indian batsmen must now play very long and hard against the South African bowlers to stay in the game.
