Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has confirmed he will be absent from the forthcoming season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The veteran left-handed batsman requested the cricket board to withdraw his name from the upcoming player auction, scheduled for November 23rd.
The decision comes after a prolonged break from professional cricket for the 36-year-old, whose recent focus has been entirely dedicated to his health recovery. Tamim suffered a heart attack during a domestic fixture back in March 2025 and has not played any competitive cricket since that incident.
Ending a Perfect BPL Run
Tamim’s absence marks the end of a unique streak: since the BPL’s inaugural season in 2012, he had participated in every single edition and is widely recognised as one of the tournament’s most consistent and successful batters.
His leadership and batting were particularly instrumental in guiding Fortune Barishal to two consecutive championship titles. However, the decision by his former team, Fortune Barishal, to also opt out of the competition—citing insufficient time for preparation—added weight to Tamim’s own choice to remain sidelined.
Administrative Ambitions
In addition to his health goals, the opener had recently shown interest in shifting focus toward cricket administration, announcing his intention to contest the BCB election. He later withdrew from the electoral process, however, referencing alleged government interference as the reason.
Tamim Iqbal communicated his decision to the BCB cricket operation manager, confirming his commitment to full recovery rather than an immediate return to the field.
