Bangladesh Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto Champions Sporting Wickets After Decisive Test Win Over Ireland
Bangladesh secured a compelling innings-and-47-run victory over Ireland in the first Test at Sylhet, a result that prompted captain Najmul Hossain Shanto to advocate for the continued use of balanced, “sporting wickets” at home. Shanto indicated that moving away from overly spin-dominant surfaces is the preferred strategy for the national team.
The playing surface at Sylhet was instrumental to the host’s success, offering genuine assistance to both pace and spin bowlers while providing excellent value for batting strokes.
Captain Back’s Balanced Pitches
Shanto firmly rejected the notion that the team had specifically requested a slow, turning track, emphasising the benefits of a challenging pitch.
“We did not ask for a spin-friendly pitch. We wanted a sporting wicket, and that is precisely what we were provided. Even on the later days of the match, the surface held up quite well,” Najmul remarked.
He underscored that while winning remains the ultimate goal in international Test cricket, playing on surfaces that challenge all aspects of the game aids player development. “I always believe that if given the choice, playing on a challenging, sporting wicket is very important. This pitch was great for run-scoring but also offered help to everyone—pacers and spinners alike. A balanced surface is beneficial for the entire team.”
Impressive Returns from Key Players
Shanto highlighted the outstanding contributions of two players central to the win: debutant spinner Hasan Murad and returning opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy.
-
Hasan Murad’s Impact: Murad displayed great patience and maturity, bowling with control to finish with a match tally of six wickets, including four in the second innings. Shanto praised the debutant for translating his excellent first-class consistency to the Test arena.
-
Mahmudul Hasan Joy’s Resurrection: After being dropped from the team previously, Joy made a tough return look effortless, crafting a commanding 171-run innings in Bangladesh’s first-innings total. The captain credited Joy for showing a significant positive shift in his mental approach.
Anticipating the Mirpur Challenge
Looking ahead to the second and final Test, scheduled for Mirpur starting November 19, Najmul acknowledged the traditional difficulties associated with the venue. He hopes the confidence gained in Sylhet will help the players manage the high-pressure environment in Mirpur.
The series finale will also be a moment of national pride, as veteran Mushfiqur Rahim is slated to play his 100th Test match—a historic first for Bangladesh. Najmul expressed the team’s excitement and deep respect for the milestone, wishing that the experienced player continues his tenure with the team.
