Alex Marshall, the independent chair of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s newly established Integrity Unit, has disclosed that his recommendation to keep nine individuals out of this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) auction stemmed from a detailed 900-page report compiled by a three-member inquiry panel.
The decision to exclude these players and officials stirred controversy, with Anamul Haque, one of the affected cricketers, publicly asking the BCB to provide proof of any alleged misconduct.
Marshall emphasized that the exclusion is temporary and specific to this edition of the BPL. “After reviewing the 900-page report, I advised the governing council that certain individuals should not participate in this event. This includes players as well as other personnel. They are not banned from cricket altogether; this is purely to avoid potential issues during the tournament,” he said.
He also noted that the evidence from the ongoing investigation will be disclosed once the inquiry concludes. “Details will be shared only if individuals plead guilty or are found guilty by a tribunal. Once that happens, the decisions will be published online to ensure complete transparency,” Marshall explained.
Beyond player exclusions, Marshall revealed plans to collaborate with Bangladeshi authorities to implement criminal laws targeting corruption in sport. “In the next few months, I hope to work with the government to criminalize corrupt practices in cricket. Franchise owners in BPL 12 will also face thorough scrutiny, including checks on their staff and funding sources,” he added.
He further stressed the responsibility of team owners: “Franchise owners must ensure the event is conducted fairly. Everyone associated with their teams will be examined, and they will understand the consequences if unscrupulous individuals attempt to manipulate the tournament.”
Regarding potential troublemakers attending the auction, Marshall hinted at upcoming actions: “Some individuals may face unpleasant surprises before the BPL starts. People who may have bypassed anti-corruption rules in previous editions might target this event, but my team, supported by the ICC, is taking strong measures to stop them.”
Marshall concluded by reaffirming his commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the BPL. “Our focus is to protect the tournament, ensure breaches of the anti-corruption code are addressed, and maintain transparency for players, franchises, and fans.”
